PURPOSE:To obtain various kinds and forms of characters without increasing the capacities of memories, by compressing a font, forming a font by synthesizing compressed patterns and designated patterns, and connecting characters of the font. CONSTITUTION:A RAM 13 has a working area for developing compressed font information stored in a ROM 14 into a font buffer FNTBF 13a according to character images and for storing various flags, and has an area for storing information on a document to be formed, information on moved phrases, tab information, a user's dictionary, etc. A CPU 15 comprises instructions for calculations, address decoders for controlling an adder, the ROM and the RAM, etc. The ROM 14 stores a program part, font data, dictionaries, tables for various controls, etc. A font is compressed, the compressed font is laid over a blank area, and characters of the font are connected, thereby realizing enclosed characters without increasing the capacities of the memories.
