PURPOSE:To maximize the use of the performance of a head system and a tape by setting at least >=three kinds of FM carrier frequency. CONSTITUTION:When the user does not intend high band application in a VTR having a high band switch, the FM carrier frequency is selected as f1 regardless of the recording time mode and tape. In desiring the high band, when the recording time mode is selected to be a long time, e.g., the 6hr mode, the FM carrier frequency is selected as f2 for the high performance tape and selected as f3 for the high performance tape, selected as f4 for the 2hr mode and not high performance tape and as f5 for the high performance tape respectively. That is, the FM carrier frequency is selected from five kinds and the performance of tape, head system of the VTR are utilized sufficiently.
