PURPOSE:To prevent a flicker on a screen by applying an on voltage to a signal electrode when display information of a display picture element at an intersection part between a selected scanning electrode and a selected signal electrode is in a high-transmission display state, or applying an off voltage to the signal electrode when in a low transmission display state. CONSTITUTION:Every time one scanning electrode is selected, a selection voltage 1 and a selection voltage 2 are applied alternately, a nonselection voltage 3 is applied to the scanning electrode when the scanning electrode is not selected, and the on voltage 4 or off voltage 5 is applied to a signal electrode. When the display information of the display picture element at the intersection part between the selected scanning electrode and signal electrode is in the high transmitted light display state where transmitted light is intense, the on voltage 4 is applied to the signal electrode regardless of whether the selection voltage of the scanning electrode is 1 or 2 and when the information in the low transmitted light display state where the transmitted light is weak, the off voltage 5 is applied. The on voltage is -V3 V and the off voltage 5 is V4 V; and said voltage is applied to the scanning electrode and signal electrode to obtain a value (scanning electrode voltage-signal electrode voltage). There are six kinds of display picture element applied voltages 6-11. Consequently, a matrix type liquid crystal display body of high quality which has no screen flicker is obtained.
