PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of a malfunction by inserting in advance a non-ferrous untransmitting light dummy into the pipe end of the pipe to be fractionated from a group and comparing the length on each one piece by a metal detection center and photoelectric tube. CONSTITUTION:The dummy 12 of nonmetal composed of the material of untransmitting light is inserted into the pipe end of the pipe 11 to be fractionated from a group by protruding >=a certain length from the pipe end. This pipe group is passed to the transfer path 3 of a fractionating line device. Now a metal detection sensor 4 detects only the length of a metal pipe and a photoelectric tube 5 the total length of the protrusion part of the dummy 12. A difference is caused in the length of the detection time of the both. Both signals are compared by a comparison/work circuit 6 and in case there being the difference >=a specific value, the pipe 11 in which the dummy 12 is inserted is fractionated by kicking it out to a table 8 automatically with a kickout device 7 being actuated. The pertinent pipe 11 is kicked out to a transfer line 9 and if necessary a defective place is removed by cutting it by a cutter 10.
