PURPOSE:To automatically replace a electrode with a new one by deciding that the electrode is in an irregular state during detection and to enable execution of continuous automatic machining, by providing an electrode length detecting mechanism which checks the length of a electrode and detects that the length is too decreased to allow execution of machining. CONSTITUTION:In a state that, through replacement of an electrode with a new one, a electrode 16 is inserted through an electrode guide 40 and is positioned facing a workpiece 10, a detecting limit switch 15 is not turned ON by a detecting dog 13 of an electrode length detecting mechanism. Thereafter, when, after completion of machining made some times, the electrode 16 is too worn to allow machining, the detecting limit switch 15 is turned ON by the detecting dog 13, and the state is reported to an NC device. Thereafter, the sequence of a machining program is varied to a new and old electrode exchange program by means of the sequence varying mechanism of the NC device.
