PURPOSE:To absorb stress concentration generated during rolling and to improve the service life of a roll by forming a boundary part whose elastic modulus continuously changes from a value corresponding to that of a core material to a value corresponding to that of a thermally sprayed layer being the surface layer between the core and the thermal sprayed layer. CONSTITUTION:Rapidly solidified powders 3 having high elasticity, excellent spall and wear resistances are plasma sprayed on a body 2 of a highly strong and tough core 1. In that time, A >=2mm thick boundary layer whose elastic modulus continuously changes from the surface of the core 1 is formed between the core 1 and the sprayed layer 3. Stresses during rolling are reduced and the service life of a roll is improved by that composition.
