PURPOSE:To eliminate an unnecessary shock in speed change by detecting the difference between the set car speed and real car speed and also detecting the difference between a throttle opening and a shift down opening of an auto matic transmission, at the time of resuming a constant speed driving control after the release thereof, then prohibiting a shift down operation in the case that respective differences are within a predetermined value. CONSTITUTION:In the case that a constant speed driving device is employed for a vehicle with an automatic transmission, when a constant speed driving control is released and thereafter a set speed is again set so as to resume the constant speed driving control (a resume switch 24 is turned on), the difference between a real car speed detected by a car speed sensor 25 and set car speed is detected while a throttle opening corresponding to the speed difference and the shift down opening of an automatic transmission is detected. In the case that the speed difference and opening difference are within a predetermined value, the command for prohibiting a shift down operation so as to stop the operation of a shift control device 36. Thus, the shift operation just prior to a target speed so as to eliminate an incisor shock in speed change.
