PURPOSE:To enable execution of machining under an optimum discharge state, by a method wherein based on rise characteristics of a gap voltage, detected by means of a pulse for measurement, at a present point of time, at which a pulse is applied, and the rest time fluctuation factor of a main discharge pulse is read from a table to output it to a pulse generating circuit. CONSTITUTION:A pulse for measurement from a source device 14 for measurement is applied between an electrode 1 and a workpiece 2, data detected by a detecting circuit 15 indicates a gap between the electrode 1 and the workpiece 2 at a present point of time and rise characteristics of a discharge voltage under a gap tip concentration state. The coefficient of fluctuation, responding to a present pulse rest time value, of a main discharge pulse is read from a pulse rest time control table 17, and when the result is inputted to a pulse generating circuit 18, the circuit 18 outputs a control signal, responding to the coefficient of fluctuation, to a switching element 20 in a main source device 13. Thus, the rest time of a main discharge pulse is immediately increased or decreased in response to a present rest time according to the coefficient of fluctuation, and control is made to create a temporary optimum discharge state until the position of a gap between the electrode 1 and the workpiece 2 is controlled to an optimum discharge state by means of other device.
