PURPOSE:To obtain the title copolymer excellent in heat resistance in good efficiency, by polymerizing (alpha-methyl)styrene with acrylonitrile in a perfect mixing type reaction tank and further polymerizing the reaction mixture in another reaction tank. CONSTITUTION:A monomer mixture is obtained by mixing 30-60wt.% alpha- methylstyrene (A) with 20-40wt.% acrylonitrile (B) and 50-5wt.% styrene (C). This monomer mixture is continuously fed to a perfect mixing type reaction tank and polymerized at 100-130 deg.C for 1-5hr in the presence of 0.05-0.0015mol.%, based on component A, radical polymerization initiator of a 10hr-half life temperature of 60-100 deg.C, e.g., t-butylperoxy 2-ethylhexanoate, to a conversion of 30-60wt.%, and further polymerized in at least another reaction tank at a temperature higher than that in the above tank so that the polymer conversion in this part may be at least 20wt.% and the overall conversion may be 60-90wt.%.
