PURPOSE:To improve feeling of engine brake by setting the speed change target values having different characteristics through plural means and selecting/setting one of them corresponding to operating condition. CONSTITUTION:Rotation N'' of an input side pulley 30 having best specific fuel consumption corresponding to a throttle opening is compared with an actual rotation N, and a speed change command is produced. When a throttle is fully closed, it is judged whether a shift lever is set at L-position and an engine brake is operated as required. At position D, a vehicle speed sensor 903 reads in a vehicle speed V and calculates an acceleration (alpha) at that time point so as to judge whether it is a proper acceleration A, and if alpha>A, N'' is set to a value higher than N and the engine brake is operated. At position L, the current torque ratio is compared with a torque ratio with which proper engine brake is obtained for the vehicle speed V. Consequently, the engine brake operation can be switched to the best state.
