PURPOSE:To surely detect the generation of roughness to precisely release the lock-up mode of a transmission by detecting the generation of roughness in which variation in the output torque of an engine is increased, in accordance with variation in the rotational speed of a torque converter. CONSTITUTION:A rotational speed detector 21 detects the rotational speed of the output shaft 18 of a torque converter 10, and a rotational speed change detecting means 22 calculates a variation in angular speed in accordance with the detection signal from the detector 21. Further, when the variation of the angular speed of the output shaft 18 is greater than a predetermined value, it is determined that roughness of an engine 1 occurs, and therefore, a lock-up clutch 15 is turned off to release the lock-up of the torque converter 10. Thus, in comparison with a conventional method in which the generation of roughness is detected from the vibration of an engine, it is possible to surely detect the generation of roughness of the engine without affection of vibration of a vehicle body, thereby it is possible to precisely release the lock-up mode of the transmission.
