PURPOSE:To obtain a handy and practical electronic dictionary by reading optically a language and outputting the equivalent translated language to print it by a printer. CONSTITUTION:A language to be translated on an original 14 is read by an optical reading part 5 and sent to a translating part via an A/D converting part 6, a binary signal converting preprocessing part 7. Then a recognition control part 8 refers to a recognition dictionary 9 to perform the identification of alphabet. A retrieval control part 11 refers to a meaning dictionary 10 to decide a translated language in response to English words obtained from said alphabet identification and outputs the decided language via a printer part 13. In such a way, key input operations are omitted and the input/output operations are facilitated. Thus it is possible to obtain a handy and practical electronic dictionary.
