PURPOSE:To eliminate an unconverted part to stabilize color conversion by properly extending the area indicated with the result of color decision performed after smoothing of image information. CONSTITUTION:Image data Y, M, and C read in by an image input device 1 are smoothed by smoothing circuits 2-4, and outputs SMY, SMM, and SMC are inputted to a window comparator 5, and respective upper limit values YH, MH, and CH and lower limit values YL, ML, and CL are set. If the output of each smoothing circuit is between the upper limit value and the lower limit value, the window comparator 5 outputs '1' and this output is inputted to a decision signal extending circuit 6 to perform the extension processing. An extended color decision signal 40 is inputted as the select control signal in selectors 7-9; and when the select control signal 40 is '1', colors SY, SM, and SC after color conversion are outputted to perform color conversion.
