PURPOSE:To make it possible to reduce the number of change-over elements by changing over the power transmission path between a V-belt type continuous variable transmission mechanism and gears with the use of only one hydraulic clutch while the change-over between the forward and backward movements is carried out with the use of a hydraulic clutch and a mechanical change-over clutch. CONSTITUTION:During start or the like, when a large drive force is required, a synchronous mesh mechanism 52 is set at a forward position and a first hydraulic clutch 44 is turned on while a second hydraulic clutch 60 is turned off so that drive force from engine 10 through a torque converter 12 is transmitted to drive shafts 76, 78 in a differential mechanism 66 through a hollow shaft 36. Then, when the second hydraulic clutch 60 is turned on after the normal running condition is effected, the drive force increases the rotational speed through a V-belt transmission mechanism 16, 24, 26, and is then transmitted through a forward driven shaft side gear 58, a one-way clutch 40 and a backward output gear shaft side gear 50. Further, during backward movement the synchronous mesh mechanism 52 is set at a rearward position and the first hydraulic clutch 44 is turned on while the second hydraulic clutch 60 is turned off. Thus it is possible to reduce the number of change-over elements and therefore it is possible to miniaturize the vehicle transmission.
