PURPOSE:To obtain a semiconductor laser which does not mistake the nonoccurrence of a tracking error for the occurrence of the error by a method wherein a submount is formed by a substance whose reflectance is low in relation to a laser beam oscillated by a laser chip. CONSTITUTION:A submount 20 where a laser chip 10 is mounted is formed by a substance whose reflectance is low in relation to a laser beam oscillated by the laser chip 10. For example, a submount 20 is formed by a ceramic whose reflectance is low and whose thermal conductivity is good after a ceramic powder has been pressed and sintered. A laser chip 10 is mounted to the submount 20 in such a way that its radiating edge 11 protrudes from a front edge 21 of said submount 20. By this setup, the possibility that the radiated laser beam is reflected to the front edge of the submount is low. Accordingly, it is possible to eliminate the cause that the nonoccurrence of a tracking error is mistaken for the occurrence of the error.
