PURPOSE:To make it possible to automatically adjust a chain so as to set the chain always in a predetermined stretched condition by providing a retracting distance limiting means for holding the retracting distance by which the chain retracts from a chain pressing condition effected by a plunger member during engine operation, always at a predetermined value. CONSTITUTION:During stopping an engine, a plunger presses a chain 16 by the urging force of a first spring 36 so that the chain 16 is held in a stretch condition. When the engine starts from such a stopping condition, the plunger member 32 retracts. A stopper 31 in a retracting distance limiting means 42 is moved by means of a ratchet 41 engaged with a tooth section 42 in the plunger member 32 in association with the retracting movement of the latter, overcoming a second spring 38, integrally with the plunger member 32. When the retracting movement is stopped due to the engagement between an elongated groove 40 in a stopper 37 and a pin 39 in a cylinder body 33, the retracting movement of the plunger member 32 is limited, thereby the chain 16 may be automatically held in a predetermined stretched condition.
