Material problems can occur due to increased stresses between the valve seats and thermal overloading of individual zones of the cylinder head, especially in air-cooled internal combustion engines, the cylinder heads of which are composed of an aluminium material. Variable heating of the cylinder head leads to irregular expansion, which, due to the distortion of the engine parts, leads to sealing problems between cylinder head and cylinder. Heat distortion and mechanical wear can be considerably reduced in that ceramic fibres are purposely incorporated in the aluminium material in view of the thermal and mechanical stresses to be expected. Sealing problems between cylinder head and cylinder can be overcome by the insertion of a fibre-reinforced ring of aluminium material.
