PURPOSE:To attain a high speed distance calculation between strokes by approximating the stroke by the number of dots according to the length thereof and obtaining a corresponding dot by thinning out the dots. CONSTITUTION:The stroke is dot approximated by any number of dots on a sequence Wk correspondingly to the length and in the correspondence of the dots between the strokes having the different number of dots, approximate dots are thinned out from the stroke having the large number of approximate dots and after the number of the approximate dots is set, a matching between the strokes is taken. In a rule for thinning out, the number of the approximated dots is represented by the sequence Wk and the thinning out is carried out by making the difference of (k) of the strokes as an unit. For instance, when one stroke is approximated by W4 dots and the other stroke is approximate by W3 dots, the set of the strokes is (W4, W3) and the difference in (k) is 1, so that one dot is respectively thinned out. Thereby, the high speed distance calculation between the strokes can be attained.
