The invention relates to a method for controlling the drive of a press and of a transfer device having a drive which is independent of the press. According to the invention, this is achieved in that the free-flow angle of the press is fully exploited over its entire range in such a way that the press operates with a continuous stroke and the start-stop commands for the transfer device are selected with calculation, in dependence on the number of strokes and the extent of the transfer steps, of the minimum acceleration and speed of the transport movement with fixed dynamic parameters for the closing and lifting movement.
