PURPOSE:To improve the use efficiency of projection light by providing a polarizing beam splitter which takes out one polarized component of the luminous flux from a projection light source in a projection optical system to make this component incident on a display element and takes out a polarized component orthogonal to the polarized component of the scattered light from the display element. CONSTITUTION:A laser beam 2 from a semiconductor laser 1 of a laser light source is deflected and scanned by an optical scanner 3 and is nconverged by a lens 4 to write an image on a liquid crystal light valve 5. One polarized component is taken out from a projection light 7 from a projection light source 6 by a polarizing beam splitter 8 and is made incident on the liquid crystal light valve 5 and one polarized component (having the plane of polarization orthogonal to that of said polarized component) of the reflected light is allowed to pass through the polarizing beam splitter 8 to read out the written image, and this image is expanded by a lens 9 and is projected on a screen. Thus, the projection light 7 from the projection light source 6 is effectively used for projection.
