PURPOSE:To obtain the titled zirconia based particles having excellent nonaggregating property, dispersibility, etc., by blending or suspending zirconia based powder and a coupling agent in a solvent and heating the obtained blend or suspension at a specific temperature to carry out surface treatment of the zirconia based powder. CONSTITUTION:Zirconia powder or zirconia based powder containing an element selected from yttrium, cerium, calcium and magnesium in an amount of <=50mol% expressed in terms of oxide is prepared. The zirconia based powder and a coupling agent are then blended or suspended in a solvent, e.g. water or methanol. The resultant blend or suspension is subsequently heated at a temperature within the range of 20-300 deg.C to treat the surface of the zirconia based powder. Thereby the aimed zirconia based particles having the treated surface are obtained. Vinyltrichlorosilane, isopropyltriisostearoyl titanate, acetoalkoxyaluminum diisopropylate, etc., are preferably used as the coupling agent.
