1,176,494. Compositions of fluorinated polymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 March, 1968 [24 April, 1967], No. 18777/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] A polymeric composition comprises (a) at least one polymer selected from homopolymers of highly fluorinated organic monomers, in which the fluorinated part of the molecule is linear, and copolymers of such monomers with non-fluorinecontaining polymerizable vinyl or substituted vinyl compounds and (b) at least one polymer selected from homopolymers of highly fluorinated organic monomers, in which the fluorinated part of the molecule is branched, and copolymers of such monomers with non-fluorinecontaining polymerizable vinyl or substituted vinyl compounds. Highly fluorinated monomers are those in which all or substantially all of the hydrogen atoms of alkyl, alkenyl or aryl groups therein have been replaced by fluorine. Up to 5% by weight of the total weight of monomers may comprise monomers containing cross-linking sites in their molecules. Specific polymers employed are the reaction products of polyvinyl alcohol and (i) the branched ketene (C 2 F 5 ) 2 (CF 3 )CCH=C=O and (ii) perfluorooctanoic acid, (C 10 F 19 OC 6 H 4 CO 2 CH=CH 2 ) n , homopolymers of 1H,1H-pentadecafluorooctyl acrylate, perfluoroisopropyl acrylate, S-hexafluoroisopropyl acrylate, (C 2 F 5 ) 2 CF 3 CCH 2 COOCH 2 CH 2 OOCC(CH 3 ) = CH 2 , C 10 H 19 OC 6 H 4 CH 2 OOCC(CH 3 ) = CH 2 and (C 2 F 5 ) 2 CF 3 CCH 2 COOCH = CH 2 . Minor proportions of #-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and N-methylol acrylamide may be incorporated and the polymers cross-linked with toluylene diisocyanate and chloroacetic acid respectively. Butyl methacrylate is also used as a comonomer. Solutions of the polymers in 1,2,2-trifluoro-1,1,2-trichloroethane and 1,1,1- trichloroethane are made up. |
