PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as various kinds of physiologically active substances and intermediate thereof from readily available raw material in good yield, by reacting a alpha-amino acid ester having a specific molar ratio with a alpha-substituted carboxylic acid ester in the presence of a base. CONSTITUTION:A alpha-amino acid ester is reacted with a alpha-substituted carboxylic acid ester having eliminating group in alpha-position in the presence of a base such as anhydrous sodium carbonate, etc., at 20-120 deg.C for 1-30hr, preferably at 40-90 deg.C. The reaction is carried out using excess amount than equimolar alpha-amino acid ester based on alpha-amino acid ester to provide the aimed product expressed by the formula (R1 and R4 are alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, etc.; R2 and R3 are alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, hetero ring-substituted alkyl, etc.; * is asymmetric carbon).
