PURPOSE:To obtain a readily producible colorless optically active liquid crystal compound, consisting of a specific chiral smectic C liquid crystal compound, stable to light, moisture, heat, etc., and capable of providing liquid crystal display elements having excellent responsiveness and memory properties. CONSTITUTION:The aimed liquid crystal compound expressed by formula I [R is 2-16C alkyl; m is 1 or 2; n is 0 or 1; X is H, F or Cl; Z is -COO-, -O-, formula II, etc.; 2MB is (S)-2-methylbutyl; * indicates asymmetric carbon of (R) or (S) configuration]. The above-mentioned compound is synthesized by brominating an anisole derivative, converting the resultant compound into a Grignard compound with metallic magnesium, reacting the formed Grignard compound with (S)-2-methylbutyl bromide in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. palladium chloride, etc., and demethylating the reaction product.
