PURPOSE:To contrive not to be misconceived that even though a beam reflected by a disc is transmitted a half mirror and reaches a submount, a tracking error has been generated by a method wherein a laser chip is contrived so as to be mounted on the submount slanting its exit end face to oscillate laser light at a prescribed angel with the front end face of the submount. CONSTITUTION:A semiconductor laser is constituted in a structure, wherein a front end face 21 of a submount 20 is formed at a prescribed angle with an exit end face 11 of a laser chip 10 in such a way that the front end face 21 of the submount 20, whereon the laser chip 10 is mounted, and laser light to be oscillated from the laser chip 10 do not intersect orthogonally each other. Accordingly, even though a beam, which is reflected by the surface of a disc and is transmitted a half mirror, is irradiated on the front end face 21 of the submount, this beam is never reflected again in the direction of the disc. Thereby, an erroneous operation to be judged that a tracking error has been generated by the beam reflected by the front end face 21 of the submount 20 is never generated.
