PURPOSE:To obtain an ointment base resistant to the viscosity lowering caused by light (ultraviolet ray) irradiation, by thickening an aqueous solution of carboxyvinyl polymer with an amino acid. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution containing 0.05-5wt.% carboxyvinyl polymer is added with an aqueous solution of an amino acid (preferably ornithine, lysine, arginine or proline) under stirring to form a uniform mixture. If necessary, the mixture is adjusted to pH 5-9 with a pH modifier to obtain an ointment base having a viscosity of preferably 1,000-100,000cps at 20 deg.C. The amount of the amino acid added to the composition is usually 0.1-10.0wt.% based on the whole composition. An active drug is mixed into the base to prepare a gel ointment suitable for applying to mucosa and skin.
