Heading B5A An operable die assembly for an extruder comprises a stationary die member 1 rigidly fixed to the extruder 3, a movable die member H which when closed seats against the stationary die member and the extruder head, a clamp engageable with the movable die member when in its closed position, means for moving the clamp into and out of engagement with the movable die member and means for applying a force to the clamp when engaged with the movable die member; the clamp being oriented obliquely to the extrusion path through the die and the force applying means acting along the line of the clamp. The line of the clamp is preferably the direction of the resultant force applied to the movable die by the pressure of the extrudate. The fixed die member 1 is bolted to the extruder 3 and the movable die member H is pivotally mounted on the extruder by rod 5 and is held in position by a double acting piston 6. At the side of movable die H is a projection 13 (seen in Fig. 2, which is a section along line II-II, in Fig. 1) which is engaged by the clamp 11. The clamp comprises a pair of U-shaped arms 10, pivotally connected at their open ends 12 by a pin 22. A piston 20 is also pivoted on pin 22 and moves in cylinder 18 bolted to the extruder frame. The top of the clamp comprises a screw nut 16 with a rounded end, which engages in a depression 17 in projection 13. The clamp is tightened on the movable die member by admission of hydraulic fluid through inlet 18a into the cylinder 20, forcing the piston 19 downwards and increasing the pressure of the clamp on the lug 13, the hydraulic pressure being sufficient to exceed the extrusion pressure and keep the die closed. To release the clamp, the admission of high pressure fluid through inlet 18a is stopped and low pressure fluid is forced in through inlet 18b, raising the piston. The clamp is raised vertically to clear the depression 17 while the pin 28 slides in the elongated hole in link 26. As the piston is raised further, the link 26 pivots about pin 27 and the clamp is sprung away from the die assembly against a bias spring 30 which assists its return. The die may then be opened for cleaning by actuation of two way piston 6. |
