PURPOSE:To reduce the track pitch and to decrease the tape consumption by forming at least five areas within each helical track with gaps of the prescribed length secured among them. CONSTITUTION:The 16 pieces of tracks 3-18 are formed with a single rotation of a rotary cylinder. The video and audio data are recorded on tracks 5, 9, 13 and 17 respectively. While the video data and the control signals are recorded on tracks 3, 4, 6-8, 10-12, 14-16 and 18. Then a queue audio track 19, a servo control track 20 and a time code track 21 are added as the lengthwise tracks. Thus a control signal area is provided within a helical track with high efficiency. In such a way, data can be recorded and reproduced with a narrow track pitch for reduction of the tape consumption by applying a guard band azimuth recording method together with an ATF technique.
