PURPOSE:To contrive to improve the quality of a reproduced picture by forming data relating to adjacent picture data as picture data subjected to linear interpolation among picture data relating to an original picture signal before processing the picture data relating to the picture signal after processing so as to ensure smoothness in the reproduced picture and to exclude uneven picture. CONSTITUTION:In obtaining the picture data after processing such as magnification or reduction of the picture data comprising plural picture element data, let the picture data before processing relating to a picture element number N before processing be f(N), let magnification or reduction be R and let the picture data after processing relating to the picture element number K after processing be g(K), then the picture data g(K) after processing is selected so that the relation of g(K)=(1-t).f(N)+t.f(N+1) is established, where N is an integral part of the value calculated by K/R and (t) is a demical part of K/R, and N and K are selected as 0, 1, 2... Thus, the smoothness of the reproduced picture is ensured and the quality of the reproduced picture is improved further.
