PURPOSE:To conduct an experiment on a specimen at low temp. under high pressure, by employing benzene as a pressure medium. CONSTITUTION:Benzene as a pressure medium 4 is received in a pressure container 3 along with a specimen and a piston 2 is pushed in the container 3 from above and pushed by a single axle compressor to apply pressure to the specimen. By holding the piston 2 by a locking nut 1, the pressure is confined in the container. At this time, benzene C6H6 is solidified at 5 deg.C under atmospheric pressure and the temp. thereof rises to about 33 deg.C under pressure of 1kbar. Therefore, the medium is already solidified at such a stage that the specimen is pressurized at ambient temp. and pressure is confined and, by lowering temp., the sharp reduction in the pressure of the medium accompanied by the transformation of a liquid-solid phase can be avoided. By this method, an experiment at liquid helium temp. of 4.2K becomes possible under about 30,000atm. being the pressure limit of a clamp system.
