PURPOSE:To enhance printing speed, by providing an electrothermal head with a preheating electrode for applying a fixed voltage between it and a common electrode to preheat a part to be electrothermally heated by a printing electrode. CONSTITUTION:When a specified semiconductor switch 12 is closed according to image data, a voltage is applied between a printing electrode 4a and a common electrode 2, whereby an electric current is passed through an electrical resistance layer 9a between the electrode 4a and the electrode 2. Then, a temperature rise is induced in the vicinity of a contact part between the resistance layer 9a and the printing electrode 4a, and an ink in an ink layer 9c is transferred and adhered to a recording paper 8, thereby achieving recording. A heat generating sheet 9 is preheated by a preheating electrode 6 to such an extent that the ink of the ink layer 9c is not transferred, so that the ink is heated up to a transferable temperature on the application of the voltage between the printing electrode 4a and the common electrode 2, and the ink is transferred onto the paper 8. Thus, the period of time required for transferring the ink is shortened, and printing speed can be enhanced. |
