In the fabrication of a nuclear reactor vessel casing ring, comprising a low alloy steel ring lined with a thin stainless steel cladding and fitted with internal projecting guide blocks of nickel base alloy, an annular region of the ring is left unclad and is built up by arc weld deposition of Inconel type alloy to form a projecting profile. The weld deposit is then machined and an insert of Inconel type alloy is arc welded to it by deposition of Inconel type alloy in a groove formed between the insert and the machined weld deposit.
