PURPOSE:To provide a carrier for supporting microorganism, composed of a highly porous foam glass having a specific water-absorption, having excellent strength and durability and useful in the field of applied microbial industry, etc. CONSTITUTION:Powder of glass such as silica glass is added with a foaming agent, heated to effect simultaneous softening and foaming and solidified by cooling to obtain the objective carrier for supporting microorganism. The carrier has a water-absorption of >=50wt.%, a central pore diameter (volume) of 1.0-50mu and a pore volume of 1.0-5.0ml/g. If necessary, the carrier is made to contact for 1-2 days with a suspension produced by dispersing yeast cells, etc., in a dispersant such as a fermentation liquid to obtain immobilized microorganism containing >=10<6> cells of yeast per 1cm<2> of the surface of the carrier and having an elimination ratio of the yeast of <=1%. |
