PURPOSE:To write and display an optional character, symbol or the like on a desired still picture by recording previously a character display command signal and a picture switching signal in a second recording medium, and switching a reproduced picture when the picture switching signal from the second recording medium is regenerated. CONSTITUTION:When in a reproducing mode, the display command signal is read out from a third track of a magnetic tape M, it is converted into a parallel signal by a serial/parallel conversion circuit 41, and is inputted to a character generator 42. The synchronizing signal of a still picture signal is given to the character generator 42 from a synchronizing separator circuit 43. Accordingly, a video signal, which expresses the character, instructed by the display command signal, and besides, synchronizes with the synchronizing signal, is outputted, and is given to a synthesis circuit 44, and both signals are superimposed. Accordingly, the still picture, on which a writing, consisting of one character or of plural number of the characters, is superimposed, appears in the prescribed position of the picture frame of a CRT 40.
