PURPOSE:To print by using a font group giving an expression approx. similar to a desired expression when a required font group is not provided, by outputting appropriate font data selected through a manual selection mode when a font data group corresponding to given printing data is not stored in a font storage means. CONSTITUTION:When printing data is fed to an input means 1 and the printing data is discriminated as character data by an analyzing means, the data is stored into a printing buffer. Then, font data is sent from a font supplying means 6, while a generating means 3 generates control data in a dot map form, and printing is conducted by a printing means 4 through a printing controlling means 5. When a font selection command is discriminated by the analyzing means 2, it is judged whether a selected font is stored in the printer, and when a font group having features conforming to those of the selected font is present, the font data is outputted from the means 6. When the relevant font group is not stored in the printer, an OFF indication is displayed on a display panel 7 by a display controlling means 9, upon which the user selects an appropriate font by a selecting means 8. Thus, even when a required font is not stored, an expression approx. similar to that obtained by use of the required font can be printed.
