Banknotes can be subjected to an authenticity check by using a device analysing the properties of the banknote which are identical in different orientations in space. In particular, the entire surface region of at least one side of a banknote can undergo spectral analysis by using a light beam reflected from the banknote or passing through the latter. The radiation received is integrated over the entire surface region and then, by the use of a microprocessor-assisted apparatus, compared with stored spectral information which serves as a model and which is assigned to the different banknote types. An algorithm which allows deviations, for example as a result of soiling of a banknote, can be used. |
