PURPOSE:To obtain finely divided lump of mycelia and to promote the production of valuable substance while suppressing foaming phenomenon, by aerobically culturing mycelia of microorganism belonging to Basidiomycetes or Ascomycetes in a pasty culture medium produced by adding a hardly water-soluble substance to a liquid medium. CONSTITUTION:Spores or mycelia of microorganism belonging to Basidiomycetes or Ascomycetes are aerobically cultured in a pasty culture medium produced by adding a hardly water-soluble substance to a liquid medium composed of at least a soluble starch as carbon, hydrogen and oxygen sources and a liquid fertilizer containing a nitrogen source and other nutrient sources. The soluble starch used in the above process is powdery starch such as potato starch, sweet potato starch, etc. The liquid fertilizer playing the role of a nitrogen source may be an aqueous solution of urea, potassium nitrate, etc., and the nitrogen content of the solution is 7-10wt.%. The hardly water-soluble substance is preferably an organic material, especially soybean cake or beer yeast.
