PURPOSE:To improve the control accuracy, by offsetting an actual value corresponding to an engine load by a predetermined offset value in an exhaust gas recirculation control map when obtaining an EGR valve control signal from the map according to an engine speed and the engine load. CONSTITUTION:During engine operation, output signals from an engine speed sensor 35 and an accelerator opening sensor (engine load sensor) 42a are input to an electronic control circuit 70. First, an offset value alpha of an accelerator opening alpha is obtained from a predetermined offset map according to an engine speed. Then, an offset accelerator opening alpha' (=alpha- alpha) is calculated from the offset value alpha. Then, a desired EGR quantity is detected by utilizing a predetermined map according to the offset accelerator opening alpha' and the engine speed to control an electromagnetic vacuum control valve 61 according to the EGR quantity and regulate the vacuum induced into a vacuum chamber of an EGR valve 29, thereby controlling an opening of the EGR valve 29.
