The machine for tightening a wrapper blank about a group of articles comprises a series of movable elements alongside the articles. The elements enter apertures in the side walls of the wrapper for exertion of a tightening force. Each tight-ening element (61A) has a tightening edge to engage the wrapper. The edge is aligned with the tightening edge of an adjacent element, so that the series of elements, which are pref. lugs, provide a continuous composite edge movable through the station. The machine includes spaced metering bars and guides for feed of groups of articles from an infeed conveyor.
