摘要 PURPOSE:To provide the title material which utilizes thermal and electro-optical effects and is excellent in electric field response and durability and which comprises a transparent electrode substrate and, superimposed thereon, a liq. crystal of a siloxane polymer capable of being rearranged from a smectic phase to a nematic phase upon temp. elevation. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode substrate (A) is prepd. by imparting electric conductivity to glass, polyethylene terephthalate, polysulfone, etc. by means of metal (oxide) evaporation or sputtering or the like. Onto the substrate (A) is applied a soln (B) prepd. by dissolving a siloxane polymer liq. crystal capable of being rearranged from a smectic phase to a nematic phase upon temp. elevation to 40 deg.C or above [e.g., a compd. of formula I (wherein X is a group of formula II and Y of formula III; m is 30-90; and n is 25-75)] in an org. solvent so as to form a dried coating of 2-50mum in thickness, and dried, thereby preparing the title material. With respect to this material, writing and erasing are performed at a nematic phase temp. of above, and record storage is performed at a smectic phase temp. or below.
