PURPOSE:To omit a position detecting sensor for a shift member by providing a specific patterns at a position out of an original mounting area and within the scan-enable range of a reading means. CONSTITUTION:An original P containing image information is put on an original mounting area 2 and a shift member 5 is moved to a point under a binarized pattern 8 by a drive means. Thus the pattern 8 is detected by an image sensor 10 and the pattern information on the detected pattern 8 is used as the position detecting information on the member 5. Thus the accurate position of the member is decided even though the pattern of the image information given to the original P is equal to the pattern 8 since this pattern 8 is set out of the area 2.
