PURPOSE:To shorten the time required for sweeping and to speed up detection by sweeping a wide frequency range by a vibration inducing means and detecting an extremal value, and then sweeping a narrow range including the extremal value and detecting a nozzle and a sample contacting each other. CONSTITUTION:A nozzle body 33 is held by a suction 80 through a vibration transmission plate 32 and the nozzle member 33 is vibrated by the vibration inducing means driven by a frequency control circuit 90 to sweep the wide frequencty range, so that an extremal value detecting means detects the extremal value of the current output of the vibration inducing means. Then a sweep range reducing means reduces the sweep frequency range to the narrow range including a frequency corresponding to the detected extremal value, the frequency is so varied as to sweep the reduced narrow sweep frequency range thereafter, and the nozzle body 33 is vibrated. Variation in the extremel value of the current output of he vibration inducing means is detected to detect the liquid level position of the sample.
