PURPOSE:To produce an aromatic polyamide containing no aliphatic chain in the main chain, being excellent in strength, heat resistance, and heat stability and being melt-moldable, by reacting a specified aromatic diamine with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (halide). CONSTITUTION:An aromatic diamine of formula I [wherein Ar1 is a bivalent aromatic residue of -C6H4-Y-C6H4-, (di)phenylene, tolylene or naphthylene, Y is -CH2-, -CH2CH2-, formula II, -O-, -S-, -SO2- or formula III] is reacted with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (halide) of any one of formulas IV-VI (wherein Y' is Y, R2-5 are each a 5C or lower alkyl, methoxy or ethoxy and X is hydroxyl or a halogen) at a molar ratio of 1:0.9-1.10 and -50-120 deg.C for 1-10hr in the presence of a condensing agent (e.g., thionyl chloride) in a reaction solvent (e.g., N,N-dimethylacetamide) to obtain an aromatic polyamide of a crystallinity (as determined by X-ray diffraction method) <=25% and a number-average MW of 5,000-100,000.
