PURPOSE:To improve the cooling efficiency and the durability of a motor for cooling fan driving by applying cooling control to heat caused by a light source of an optical scanning system in response to a original read mode. CONSTITUTION:A control unit 11 controls the drive of a scanning unit 2, the image read of an image pickup element 3 and the drive of automatic original carrier 7 and drives a cooling fan 10 synchronously with the lighting start of a halogen lamp 2a of the scanning unit and controls the motor drive time to continue the drive of the cooling fan 10 for a prescribed time after the original read of the scanning unit 2 is finished and the halogen lamp 2a is extinguished, base on the selected and commanded original read mode. After image processing is applied to the image information read by the image pickup element 3, the control unit 11 outputs the image processing data to an external device. Thus, the durability of the cooling fan is relieved and the heat generated by halogen lamp lighting is cooled efficiently.
