PURPOSE:To judge the location of a fault occurring at a station at a farther position than said location by transmitting a fault-representing signal (AIS) instead of an OCC from a reception terminal station in case a reserve line is used for a signal in current use, and the reserve operation signal (OCC) is intermitted. CONSTITUTION:If a fault occurs in a line M2 in current use, the occurrence is detected by the reception terminal station 2'. If the reserve line P is being used for OCC, a transmission station 1 switches a switch SWTP to cut off the reserve operation signal OCC, and a pattern generator PG 11 supplies a test pattern through the line P, so that a switch SWRP is switched in the reception terminal station 2 to connect a pattern detector PD 21 to the reserve line P, and at the same time, an AIS generator 23 transmits an AIS instead of the reserve operation signal OCC to the station in the following position of the network. In such a way, the decision of the location of a fault is made easier for a station at a further position than the position of OCC.
