PURPOSE:To improve the operability and maneuverability of a wheel balancer by switching a braking force in two stages and braking a main shaft with either of selected strong or weak braking forces. CONSTITUTION:When the main shaft 20 is rotated while a wheel 22 is mounted on the main shaft 20 to measure the unbalance of the wheel 22, an electromagnetic brake 23 is placed in a nonoperation state and then never impedes the rotation of the main shaft 20. The brake 23 brakes the main shaft 20 strongly while the main shaft 20 changes from a high-speed rotation state to a predetermined low-speed rotation state after the unbalance is measured and after a motor, etc., stop operating. Then when the rotating speed of the main shaft 20 detected by a phase detector 33 decreases to the predetermined low-speed rotation, the brake 23 is turned off temporarily and only when either of unbalance correction positions on both inside and outside surfaces of the wheel 22 reaches a position right above it, the brake 23 is placed in a strong operation state and then in a weak operation state a constant delay time later. Consequently, the operability of the wheel balance can be improved.
