PURPOSE:To obtain a nonpoisonous free cutting austenitic stainless steel having superior corrosion resistance, machinability and hot workability by specifying a compsn. consisting of C, Si, Mn, Ni, Cr, N, Bi, B and Fe. CONSTITUTION:This free cutting austenitic stainless steel having superior corrosion resistance and hot workability consists of, by weight, <=0.12% C, <=1.50% Si, <=5.00% Mn, 6-15% Ni, 16-22% Cr, 0.11-0.20% N, 0.03-0.30% Bi, 0.0010-0.0150% B (B/Bi=0.01-0.12) and the balance Fe with impurity elements and contains one or more among <=0.0015% S, <=4% Mo and <=4% Cu as required. The steel contains Bi as a free cutting element in place of poisonous Pb. The deterioration of the hot workability is prevented by the addition of B.
