PURPOSE:To facilitate the adjustment of the progress of an exothermic reaction and to widen the range of application of a heat generating material, by covering the surface of particles of an oxidizable substance undergoing an exothermic reaction through oxidation with a resin to form a heat generating material. CONSTITUTION:This heat generating material has a constitution in which the surface of particles of an oxidizable substance undergoing an exothermic reaction through oxidation is covered with a resin. As the covering resin, a synthetic resin, such as a polyurethane, a polyester, a phenolic resin, gum arabic, gelatin or methylcellulose, or a natural resin can be suitably used. Before the oxidizable substance particles are covered with the resin, it is preferable that the particles are granulated so that a plurality of the oxidizable substance particles 1 are present within one covering film 2, or appropriate spaces 3 are present among the particles 1 of the oxidizable substance within the covering film 2, in order to facilitate the breakage of the covering film by a suitable external pressure.
