Triglycidyl isocyanurate (I) having 39-43% epoxy groups, and polymers of (I) having 32-37% epoxy groups are prepared by- (1) condensation of cyanuric acid (II) with epichlorhydrin (III) at 100-115 degrees C in proportions 1:10 to 1 15 in the presence of t-amines, quaternary ammonium salts or bases; (2) dehydrochloration by alkali at 20-100 degrees C; (3) separation of alkali metal chloride; (4) distillation of (III) at 50-65 degrees C and 50-100 mm Hg pressure to give a product of 50-60% concn; (5) separation of (I) by crystallisation at 15-25 degrees C; (6) complete removal of (III) by distillation at 60-100 degrees C and 5-100 mm Hg to give a poly(glycidyl isocyanurate) resin. The resin is used as a base for adhesives and binders for glass fibre laminates. A pure polymer, of high epoxy content is obtained by introducing the crystallisation stage (5) at the specified concentration.
|
