Brassinolide derivs. of formula (I) are prepd. by reacting compds. of formula (II) with a reducing agent, i.e. borane to obtain compds. of formula (III), and removing protecting gps. in 1,2-position of (III). prepn. of (III) comprises dissolving (II) in an inert solvent, adding the reducing agent, agitating sufficiently and adding a thin alkaline solution and a hydrogen peroxide. In the formulas, R is (a) , (b) or (c). (I) have potent, vegetative effects in the growth of vegetation.
